Lord of the Pictures: Why Shadows of Mordor’s Picture Mode Is Genius.

Shadows of Mordor is the latest — and surprisingly decent — attempt to keep milking Tolkien’s estate for all it’s worth. Fortunately, there’s nary a Hobbit in sight as the action is firmly focused on invented character Talion and he’s journey to personally examine the inside of every orc — sorry WB legal department, Uruk — by introducing them to his excessive amount of weaponry. More specifically, the pointy ends of said weaponry.

The game’s main talking point is the nemesis system, which you’ve probably heard far too much about, so I won’t add to the hand-clapping for it. If you haven’t heard of it — how?– well here’s a lovely link for you to find out more. Instead, today I’m giving the games actual best feature some overdue praise. The photo mode. Yes, I’m aware that this Shadow of Mordor and not DriveClub I’m talking about. Death has rarely looked this good and I’ve gathered a few photos that I think get across some of the awesome shots you can get in the game. I suggest you get up the Lord of the Rings theme as mood appropriate music.

This orc is clearly very excited to see some pictures.

Picture One – Comic Sensibility

With a few adjustments to the contrast and a comic book style border, Talion’s companion The Wraith almost looks like he’s been drawn here. An unexpected moment of beauty considering the game’s realistic art style.

Picture Two – Facial Features Fun

Just two best friends, really excited to see each other. I mean, ignore the knife in that orc’s stomach and don’t they look like the cutest couple? Actually, with that hand placement, that looks a bit fifty shades of awfulness.

Picture Three – Totally Edgy Noir Shot.

The ‘Noir’ filters on the game are bit fiddly, but every now and again, you get some rather good shots. Just try not to think about what Talion is going to do to that poor orc. But, you can admire how cool he looks doing. That’s the noir way.

Picture Four – Off With His Head.

Funny facial expression + spot of decapitation = shits and giggles. As you can tell, I had a bit of fun with the depth of field on this shot as well.

Picture Five – Just like the movies.

Adding on the film bars just makes most pictures look that tad more grand. Shame it also usually crops out the flying heads, but you can’t win them all.

Picture Six – Just An Orc Looking For A Whole Lot Of Love.

Hello, I’m Malmoog. I enjoy beating slaves, grog and fixing my hair into a ponytail. Looking for a Mrs. Malmoog to spend long nights down in the dung camp and possibly something more. I’ll put the orc into orchestrating a lovely time together. If you want to me, just whip you finest slave into running to East Mordor to let me know. Hey, why’s that ranger running at me with a sword…

Enjoy those? Well there’s another thirty odd here for your perusal… Look, I really, really like the photo mode, this is a judgement free blog!

Have you got Shadows of Mordor? Taken any snaps you want to share? Leave a comment and let’s see you put mine to shame!
